What is First UMC's purpose?
Our goal is to help people grow in relationship with God and one another, becoming more like Christ through worship, study, and service — together, as a church family.
What does First UMC emphasize in its ministry?
We emphasize God’s grace, a warm and welcoming worship atmosphere, and putting faith into practice through service to our Elizabethton community — including our long-running preschool ministry.
Is First UMC part of a larger denomination?
Yes. We are part of the worldwide United Methodist Church, a connectional denomination — we are not an independent congregation, but part of a much larger family of churches sharing pastors, mission, and ministry.
Is First UMC family-focused?
Yes. We value the family unit in every season of life, and we welcome people at every stage — single, married, widowed, young, and older — into the life of the church family.
What is a typical worship service like?
On a given Sunday morning, our service includes:
- Traditional hymns from the United Methodist Hymnal
- Scripture readings and public prayer
- Choir and organ or piano music
- A message from God’s Word
Who can take communion?
All are welcome at Christ’s table. United Methodists practice open communion — you do not need to be a member of First UMC to participate.
